Why Is Dad So Mad? Is a narrative story told from a family's point of view mother and children of a service member who struggles with PTSD and its symptoms. I pointed this book out to one military friend who's getting a copy for work I'm an agoraphobe with PTSD, and when my PTSD was at its height, the only emotion I had access to was anger. I pointed this book out to one military friend who's getting a copy for work and I feel like my work here is done.
I love the choices made for the artwork in this book. I relate as someone who's known military folk throughout my life. In short, I highly recommend this book. It's written by a veteran about a military family, but it explains PTSD anger so well that I feel it's useful for a family in any kind of structure if a parent or relative displays PTSD symptoms and it needs to be explained. So, there's a lot to like here. The book is taking on a complicated issue. The artwork is detailed and conveys a lot of emotional content on a very wide spectrum of feelings. But what's missing for me here is the bit about what dad is doing to help himself to get more emotionally on track.
That is, the book points out what dad's been through, what dad is dealing with emotionally, and what the family has to deal with emotionally due to being tied to the military.
But it feels like it's telling th So, there's a lot to like here. But it feels like it's telling the audience of kids that it's on them to understand that dad is under a lot of pressure, and has been through a lot, and to accept that, without really pointing toward how dad is working to 'get better' around his mental health issues.
And while I acknowledge that many people struggle with getting adequate access to mental health services, there are effective not easy, but effective treatments for PTSD which is the central focus of dad's anger throughout the book. Having grown up in a neighborhood full of angry dads although only a few of them had served in the military , it feels like the end message is to give a pass to adult, male anger if there's a 'good reason' for that anger, and to tell children they're the ones responsible for understanding dad's emotional issues and adjusting their behavior to accommodate it, and to think positively about the times dad is happy during all those times when dad is mad.

This picture book is a good place to start Mom explains it's like a fire lives inside him now, a fire he's trying to control and sometimes just can't. But the cub is assured that their family still loves each other.
That there is a need for this book breaks my heart. That such a book exists is so important. Seth Kastle and his wife are retired military, both deployed more than once. They understand the toll on all members of military families. And this is a good way to begin that conversation with little ones.
I wish the book had shown Dad reaching out to others for some counseling. Mar 07, Sarah Bigham rated it it was amazing Shelves: children. PTSD explained in a child-friendly way. Jun 08, Willow Woodford rated it it was amazing. It is illustrated by Karissa Gonzalez-Othon. I want to start this review off by saying how much I love this book! It is illustrated in very simple easy to look at drawings.
The characters in the book are depicted as a lion family which is appealing to children and adults alike. I think it is an excellent addition to the library of any military family and public libraries also.
The characters in Why is Dad So Mad are portrayed as a lion family. I think this was an excellent choice for several reasons. Firstly, it cuts across race unequivocally allowing this book to be an ideal resource for any military family whose dad has PTSD. Army families come in all sizes and colors and using lions as their characters allow his readers to read the book rather than worry about why they don't look the same. Additionally the use of the lion characters adds to the visual interest and gives the person reading it more to discuss with the child they are reading to.
Finally, the lion characters are appealing to the reader because it makes it easy to see dad cast as the angry lion and the loving protector at the same time. The illustrations about getting angry really quickly and the final one of the whole family in a group hug are some of my favorites in the book. He has trouble relaxing, being patient, and controlling his anger and these are just a few of the symptoms that Kastle touches on so artfully before showing his reader how he deals with those symptoms.
Kastle closes his excellent book with positive family images in which Dad is expressing his love to his family and smiling. My own children who are 14 and 18 read this book and adored it. Kastle is already working on his next book for military mothers with PTSD, and is using the extra funds from his Kickstarter campaign to finance it. As Kastle turned the final page of his bedtime story book, his daughter Raegan wrapped her arm around her father and kissed him on the cheek. The book is available now at www.
